Hello group
Just lately my 7year old winxp3 notebook screensaver is not
functioning anymore,
Is this a hardware or a software defect?
Are there any known DIY remedies?
Never had experienced this fault...

It's extremely doubtful that it's a hardware problem.

I'd first go to these and read up

The screen saver does not work on a Windows XP-based computer

Screen Saver May Not Start in Windows XP

Scary, but possible.

But before you do anything with the above...
It's probably just the usual Windows "glitch" of losing settings, but
you may have installed/updated/changed some other software that affects
your screensaver. Antivirus programs often have a "screensaver scan".

The other possible is a "web-fed" screensaver that's lost it's feed.
No fix for that, unless the site's down just temporarily. Pick another.

Best start:
Turn the screensaver off , then back on.(The fancy term is "toggling
settings")
right-click on a bare area of the desktop, Settings > Screen saver.

On the screensaver list , select NONE and APPLY, then reselect the one
you were using and APPLY again.
