Making Vista work with my XP network for file sharing and Printers

I verified that all are 'broadcast' nodes. The desktop XP machine that is
Cat-5 to the router is the internet connection for all three (the two laptops
are wireless). Are you saying that's a problem?

Hi Rick,

You've been very helpful, and I really appreciate your patience. Let me
restate the situation to make sure we haven't overlooked something.

Three computers. XP desktop with Cat-5 connection to Linksys router. XP
Laptop with wireless. Vista Laptop with wireless trying to access the
existing network. I mis-spoke when I said the two laptops used the desktop
to access the internet....all three use the Linksys to access the
cable-modem/internet. All three with different names, all three with same
workgroup name, same node type, different IP addresses. Two XP machines can
'see' Vista machine but cannot access. Vista machine cannot 'see' XP
machines but can access by IP address, but not by name. All three can access
the internet.

Any other thoughts? Or do you still think it's the internet sharing? Since
they can all access the internet, I thought maybe it was still somethine else.

Thanks again,
David

Hi David,

Ok, that's not ICS, that's a normal local LAN. Based on the setup you
describe, this should work without further issue - but obviously it isn't.
Is the Vista machine passworded?

Just for laughs, try passwording the Vista machine account. Sometimes, they
just want one in order for file sharing to work properly.

I passworded the File Sharing, is that what you meant, or the actual login
account? I then rebooted and no change.

Also, run the Network and Sharing Center, make sure the first three options
are enabled (Network Discovery in particular).
