I have entered a number for the hours the person worked, but it printed out as 4059987.75 and should be just 40.85. How do I make that correction?

I would guess the machine is right.

We need to know more. How are the time entered? What type of field is
used? What if any calculations are being done to the time.

I suspect you are hitting a problem due to rounding and or time vs.
numbers. That is 1:30 (one hour, thirty minutes) is 1.5 hours. You must
decide how you are going to go about this and not mix minutes and decimal
hours.
