dont ask me why but in xp computer management I inadvertently assigned a
drive partition other than c to active. Now cant get C back to active. (right
click menu "to make drive active" is greyed out)

Cant close PC down as fear it wont boot without C as active.

You don't say how many hard drives and how many partitions
you have in the system. Assuming that there is only one Primary
partition on the HD that controls booting, the setting of the "active"
flag is irrelevant, and Disk Management won't give you the option
of setting that flag. It's only if there are more than one Primary
partition on a HD that the "active" flag has any significance.

If you concerned about not being able to restart your PC
then you should make yourself a WinXP boot disk. It lets
you boot into Windows without having an active partition,
even in those cases where you need one.

Post again if you need further details.
