Making a contact sheet of pictures ?

What is the best and easiest freeware to use to create a contact sheet (to
print out) of photos on my PC ? I have a large collection of old photos from
around the area and i want to create a contact sheet to print out so that i
can have a hard copy of what i have on there.

The software should preferably have a choice of thumbnail size and have the
file descriptions printed under the thumbnail.

Irfanview Thumbnails? Gives the option of "Create contact sheet from
selected thumbs.." in the "File" menu.
It displays thumbnails all at the same sort of size whatever the
original image file sizes or types, and the size of the printed results
can be adjusted by altering the number of rows and columns of images in
the sheet. Filenames can be included and could serve as descriptions.

DPIC is my favorite.

Just point it to a folder and press the little floppy icon.

Neither did I! I just had a hunch that this marvellous bit of freeware
would do it - and it does. The man should get a medal!

I've been poking about a bit more and found that with jpegs, Irfanview
can be used to insert a comment ($C in the relevant text box) in each
jpeg, or group of jpegs, and this comment can then be displayed on the
thumbnail sheet.
A bit tedious if you have loads of jpegs, but maybe handy?
 
That sounds worth trying !. Yeah, i've just had a go at doing the contact
sheet and it works perfect !! - Thanks !
