Make Search work like it did in 2000?

I've recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP Pro. Mostly I like XP but the
Start, Search function is driving me crazy -- in fact, I find it practically
unusable.

NT's Find and 2000's Search were pretty fast. I could search my whole 60 MB
drive for, say "*work*.doc" and it would scan through partitions and folders
in order and usually turn something up in a couple of minutes. Looking for
specific text inside *work*.doc would take a bit longer, but was still
useable.

In XP, the Search function seems to go back and forth, back and forth, and
takes much longer to find anything. I've stopped searching the whole drive,
it takes so long and is usually fruitless.

Is there any way of configuring XP's Search so it works the same as 2000's?

And while I'm at it... is there a way to get XP's Search to look for text
inside PDF files?

You can disable search assistant. I don't know if it will make it search
faster or not:

Not that I'm aware of though I'm not aware of everything.
