Hello,

I have a major problem with WindowsXP :(

When i boot up my computer it goes to the welcome screen.
The problem is that the welcome screen is completely
empty other than the WindowsXP logo. None of the user
accounts are listed and neither is the "shutdown my
computer" button.

I tried booting into safe mode and it's exactly the same.
No user accounts listed what so ever.

Somebody please help :( Also, i don't really want to have
to do a repair installation. It works okay but messes up
just about all the programs i have installed and a lot of
the drivers. I find doing a clean install is more use
than a repair installaton.

Ideally i don't want to do either. There must be a fix of
some kind!

Try hitting Control-Alt-Delete twice at the login screen. Do you get a login
dialog? If so, log in as the administrator and see if the missing users still
exist. You may be able to repair them or perhaps create new user profiles and
copy files from the corrupt user profiles.

I'm afraid it doesn't work. tried it already :( I think
the Windows files have gotten corrupt somehow.

At that Welcome, hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice. That will allow you to use the
logon dialog. It might be best to use the reserve, emergency account
called explicitly
Administrator
(if you don't remember setting a password, try leaving it blank). In XP
Home you can only do that in Safe Mode

In that Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have
installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

The download is only 560 K so you can download on another machine and
bring it across on a floppy to run and install if you are having to use
Safe mode.

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon page has a check box for each username that is to appear on
Welcome.
