Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. It appears my usb hub which
worked fine the past year may be the culprit. I unhooked several devices
from the hub, uncoupled the hub from the pc and then hooked up my devices
directly to the pc and intolerable lag and error message I had been getting
disappeared and the system booted up in a couple of minutes rather than about
10 minutes.
