Major registry issues

I am working on a laptop for a student, and no matter what
I try and do an error comes up before doing the action I
initiated, which is creating major slowdown. The error is
the same, but the file keeps changing:

Registry Editor

Cannot import xxx.reg: Error opening the file. There may
be a disk or file system error.

Can anyone help on how to resolve this (hopefully without
having to wipe pc clean???)? Thanks!!

Virus, I think.
Check the registry run keys for bogus entries, update the
antiV definitions, scan.
