major problems saving documents

When I create a word document and then save it to the 'My Documents' folder,
it appeards saved. Then when I try to open it there is an error pop-up and
it won't let me open it. Additionally, I have created new Letterhead
document and when I try and create a letter placed on the letterhead and then
save it, it wipes out my letterhead. Another new document wipes out that
document and so on. I am re-naming the document and NOT accepting the
changes to the old document, so it should not change the original document.

difficult to offer any advice or opinion without knowing the version of Word
involved...

Right off the top of my head, I'd say you have some kind of third-party software
interfering with the file management. As a first step, I'd try booting both Word
and Windows in Safe Mode, then see under which circumstances the problem goes
away.
