major problem with Task Scheduler

I am running win xp pro and I can not get task scheduler to work. When I
get to the properties for Task Scheduler it shows that the service status is
stopped, When I try to start the service I get the following error message
"
Could not start the Task Scheduler service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion."

Any ideas (other than reinstalling windows)? I would love to delete and than
reinstall task scheduler without having to reload all of my other programs.

Focus on the last subject on this page about the Task Scheduler Service.
Have you tried rebooting your system? Have you checked the event log to see
if there is any information in there on the service?
