Maintaining high resolution while actual file is smaller

For PowerPoint, I believe there is a way to maintain a high resolution
graphic while making the actually PowerPoint file smaller.
However, I have no clue how. Anyone have a step by step on how to?

If your presentation is aimed at 'screen based' presentations, then the
trick is to keep any pictures/graphics at a similar resolution to the final
projector/screen

if the end screen/project will do 1024x768 pixels.... then that's what to
aim your graphics at (if they are to fill the screen)

there's a tutorial on this at

And certain versions of powerpoint can trim the excess fat for you - what
version are you using?
