main memory vs storage memory on Samsung I 730 PPC phone

We have been using Intermec devices with 128 Meg of memory. We are now using
the new Samsung i730 with 128 Meg of memory. With the Intermec device most
of the 128 Meg shows up on the settings main memory screen (screen with the
adjustable bar for storage and program allocation). However, on the Samsung
device which is also 128 meg device, only ~ 64 meg shows on the main memory
screen and the rest of the memory shows up on the storage card screen.

The file system splits the 128 memory between the storage card folder and
the main system folders. This looks like I can't have any file (i.e.
database) or running application (app + database) that is greater than 64
Meg since the memory is split between two file systems. True? False?

If I have a large application that has a large database > 64 Meg (app +
database) will I have a problem with this device?

Is the storage card memory the same speed as the main memory? Will
applications and databases run just as well from the storage memory?

Note: the all of the 128 Meg is built in, it is not memory from an SD card.
The SD card slot is empty.

Hi Kimberly,
The file system splits the 128 memory between the storage card folder and
the main system folders. This looks like I can't have any file (i.e.
database) or running application (app + database) that is greater than 64
Meg since the memory is split between two file systems. True? False?

To my knowledge, that's true - the device manufacturer implements which
memory area is flash file store and which is object store. (It's
different chips!)

A workaround could be to not expect the database in the same folder as
the application but in a folder kept in the registry or something like
that (only an option of course if the database is not >64 MB).
If I have a large application that has a large database > 64 Meg (app +
database) will I have a problem with this device?

See above: Not if application and database are < 64 MB each and you
don't expect the DB to be in the same folder as the app.
Is the storage card memory the same speed as the main memory? Will
applications and databases run just as well from the storage memory?

This might depend on the actual hardware implementation. My experience
is that the built-in flash file store is the slowest kind of memory,
external memory cards are somewhat faster and the object store is
actually the fastest.
I've seen posts around that do not recommend to have a db in flash file
store and/or an app running there, but I can not confirm that; my apps
works pretty well with both DB and app in the flash file store (keep in
mind, though, that this kind of memory has a shorter life-time).
Note: the all of the 128 Meg is built in, it is not memory from an SD card.
The SD card slot is empty.
Maybe you could have a 128 MB card in the slot? They are cheap, fast,
big and replaceable.

Hope this helps,

Roland
