mailing software question

I want to promote a small new business and send out emails / direct mail
shots and I am seeking some software to use for this.
Would a simple distribution list in Outlook XP be the solution of choice or
is there something better ?
Preferably , something which would give me info on mailshots sent so I don't
hound folks too much.
