Mail to link causes multiple pages and error about default mail client

Any mailto: link causes this message from Internet Explorer 6 SP2

The operation can not continue the default mail client is not installed
properly.

The default mail client is Outlook 2003 SP1

After I click on OK about 67 Internet Explorer pages are brought up
with mailtoemail adress that was in the link)in the address bar.

I paid for MS support but they have not be able to help me. They are
supposed to escalate the case.

I have performed detect and repair;reloaded Outlook, reloaded IE 6.0.
I get the same event when I type in the mailto: command in the command
line.

I think it is a file association issue. Any help please!

Type this in Start, Run:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

If that does not help, open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto

Export the key to a REG file, and post the contents here.
