mail merge word 2000

when i go to do a mail merge for envelopes and select the
document i require it comes up with a pop up saying word
cannot open 'document' as a data or header source because
it is a mail merge main document.

I know its a mail merge document but at the moment i only
have the table of addresses and am seemingly unable to go
back into the data to print off as envelopes?? why? what
do i have to do to get it to print to envelopes.

Ive tried using it both thru active document and new main
document neither seem to work

Probably a good idea to repost in an MS Office newsgroup.
Your question has nothing to do with Windows XP or
with hardware.
