When I use spell check, windows mail closes afte it does the spell check and
I lose the message before it can be sent. It doesn't do it every time but it
seems like it does it when the message is long.

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not very compatible
with Windows Mail.

Rick, things happen in Vista :-)

It most probably is what Gary points out, so address that.

Also when composing an email, especially important or long ones, save
regularly, every couple of lines even.

Ctrl + S will save to Drafts folder, if you get a crash you have it backed
up.

I find that doing a spell check is best done by selecting all the text and
hitting the F7 key (with F lock off, if it is on your KB).

HTH?

Norton antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Symptoms often don't start until months later.
The only way you can prove or disprove that Norton is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of aggressive antivirus products:

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:
