Coose the Arial Unicode MS font. Choose Symbol from the Insert drop down
menu, then scroll down until you find the character with the macron over it.
If you will be using and specific character often, note the Shortcut key.
 
But note that many characters with macrons (all the vowels, for example) are
already present in Unicode fonts; see
