how can i assign a macro to a mouse button?

I'd like to assign it to the click_on_wheel ....

I make no representations about the validity of this advice, since it's not
really Word-related, but I have IntelliPoint 6.3 software installed, and I
just checked my Control Panel | Mouse settings and see that one of the
options for the wheel button is Macro..., so you might look there and see
what you can figure out.

Thank you. I installed it and tried it. Unfortunately the "macro" in
intellipoint refers to mouse macros, not Word macros.

Well you can associate it to a keystroke in intellipoint and that works!
Thanks!

I did wonder about that. Presumably it will work across all
applications--not sure if that's a great idea.
