Machines goes into coma - grrrrrr

Vista 'occasionally' puts my machine into such a deep sleep that even the
mouse & keyboard (wireless) become disconnected and won't wake it - i have
to hard rest it by holding in the power button & then rescann for my mouse &
keyboard

I can't figure why it only happens ocassionally & I also can't figure out
how an O/S can remove a link between external mouse & external tranmitter

Does Vista only work with hard wired mouse/keyboard?

Is there anything I can change in the sleep settings to prevent it sending
my mouse/keyboard to sleep (they are set to wake the machine up)

I have changed the settings to stop it hybernating (hopefully fixed it)
which has lead to another related question about 'hybernate' vs 'sleep' - I
understand that when my PC goes into hybernate it saves any work before
power down and resumes it on wake up

but if that's hybernating then what is Sleep mode?

Hibernation is when the computer writes all its state (CPU, graphics, RAM,
etc.) to the hard disk and then turns off.
When you turn it on it reloads all the information and starts where it left
off (it takes a few tens of seconds).
No power is required while it is off.

Sleep means it goes into low power state where it keeps the current state
but not on the disk. It will restart virtually instantly. However it needs
power all the time it is asleep. If you lose power you /will/ lose what it
was doing when it went to sleep.
If its a laptop the battery will run down over a few days.

Hybrid sleep is a combination of the two.. It writes the state to disk in
case the power fails but then remains asleep so it will start quickly if you
use it before the power fails. It behaves as hibernation if the power fails
and reloads the state from disk.

Wireless keyboard and mouse means that you have mouse and keyboard that
transmit/receive radio or infrared signals with some device that IS wired to
your computer. Depending on your setup, this wired transmitter/receiver may
be plugged into a USB port or a PS2 style keyboard port or maybe the wire
splits and plugs into both the PS2 keyboard and mouse ports.

The mouse and keyboard are typically powered by small batteries. If the
batteries run low, that mouse or keyboard will quit working. The wired
tranmitter/receiver also requires power, which it typically gets from the
port(s) it is plugged into. USB ports typically lose the capability to
power external equipment when the computer has hibernated. I think PS2
ports retain the ability to supply a small amout of power. It may be a
setting in your BIOS. In any case, I think your system is cutting off power
to the wired transmitter/receiver, thus making the mouse & keyboard
invisible.

I have a wireless mouse for my laptop -- I plug its transmitter/receiver
into an external powered USB hub, and plug the hub into the laptop. That
way, the mouse can wake the computer even though the laptop's USB power
capability has been shut off while it is hibernating.

in my case it's PS2 and the transmitter has it's own power supply - i can't
figure it

Hello,
My new Dell computer has Visa on it, this happens to my computer several
times a day. What can be done about it. My mouse is wired straight into the
USB port. Any help would be appreciated.
