Machine turns off with out warning

Using XP Home Edition, the machine turns off with no warning. I've gotten it
to turn on as long as overnight, but at no time have I been able to get it to
stay on long enough to run any diagnostic. (Norton, Ad-Aware, Spy Bot, etc.)
Can someone help with a procedure to get me on the road to repair?

Thanks,
Jeff

Sounds like a hardware failure. I would say either the PSU or the Ram (most
likely PSU, imho), but wait and see if there are some other suggestions
before you change it :)

Is the processor fan running correctly? It could be a heat problem
with the CPU or the PS itself, as well as other hardware.

What I can see is that the CPU is constantly churning. It's running at
75-100% capacity at all times. I have not been able to figure out what's
running on it.

Boot into safe mode and see what happens. If it stays running you can then
work out what the problem is.

Before you concern yourself with hardware issues, do this SIMPLE
thing:

1 Right click desktop
2 click Screen saver
3 click "Power" at the bottom of the screen
on the right.

On the next screen

1. "Power schemes" should say "Always On"

if it doesn't, click the down arrow to the right
and click Always On

2. "Turn off monitor" should say "Never"

(you turn off the monitor in a different screen
when you turn on your screen saver)

3. "Turn off hard disks" should say "Never"

4. "System Standby" should say "Never".

5. change those settings, and then go to
the very bottom and click "Apply".

6 Then click ok, and get out of this window.

You should be good to go. Or, if this doesn't work, read the other
posts in this thread.
