Ignore him. JAD, he's a troll.

Agreed with Avast. I've used it for years now. I don't go near norton
anymore, In fact I put Avast and Adaware on all my famlies computers. It
helps with Malware and trojan horses.

Adware website is. www.lavasoftusa.com

it's AdAware, the extra A is important. Also, if google sends you to
ada-ware it's not the right place!

Hi JAD

Wouldn't my computer feel warm if so, at least around the air vents?
It doesn't.

Dave

Of course not. In fact, that suggests that the heat is not escaping from
the case. How many case fans do you have and what are their locations?
Is your CPU fan still working? What are your system and cpu temps?

Hi again Dave

Well you and Mike seem to have been right about a hijacker; after
installing Comodo Firewall and restarting my computer, it Comodo came
up with a message: "DWRCS.EXE is trying to act as a server - what do
you want to do? Deny access or allow access? We have no advice to
offer. Click here to send this file to us for analysis."

I denied it access and then looked it up on Google, and it is indeed
a Remote Control Client Agent! But what confuses me about that is why
the Firewall software didn't know what it was and why it had to ask me
to send the file to them for analysis, as google found the details of
it straight away.

Because there are thousands of them and the developers have been
improving their product instead of typing in information that can be
found on google.

Anyway, many thanks both of you for pointing me in the right
direction.

The bad news though is that although the performance of my computer
has definitely improved and the CPU usage has gone down, it's still
much slower than it used to be a couple of days ago. Could there be
something that the hacker left behind that is still affecting my
performance, and if so is there a clean-up procedure?

backup your important personal data, reformat, reinstall. Your system
has been compromised, and more issues may be there and yet to be detected.

I couldn't agree more. A reformat is an extreme measure, but in some cases,
it is more than justified. This is one of them. -Dave

I rarely defrag my drives anymore...once a year maybe. Doesn't work better than what ?
98's version? There are many defragers out there, I have not used any of them, so I can't
comment.

JAD

I read your link..... Don't fall for all those 3'rd party so called 'utilities'. registry
cleaners, defragers, download optimizers, are all potential rig killers. I don't do any
of that. My systems hum along for years without a hiccup.

Not sure I do. I don't think the OP is knowledgeable enough to deal
with this (No offence meant, btw) and I would recommend letting some
local expert sort it out either way. However, I've never known any
Windows PC that it has not been possible to clean up of virii, spyware
etc. in an afternoon. Surely a format and re-install, including all
hardware, regular programs etc is a much longer job.

Hi Dave

comodo is pretty good. the first few days you use it, it will be kind of
annoying though. It's going to ask your permission for everything until it
gets itself programmed for the way you use your machine. Unfortunately,
you're going to have to watch all those hundreds of "should I allow this?"
messages carefully, too. But it's worth the effort. It seems to pop up
more windows at you than some of the other firewalls, but I still believe
it's the best of the freebies, and it's damned good, in spite of the price.
:) -Dave

What would you say is the best firewall overall? I wouldn't mind
paying for a bit more user-friendliness!

Actually, the best was Tiny, but that was bought out, I believe. -Dave

hey jad,
What do you think about Ccleaner? I've been using it for years and also
recommend it to others. I'd hate to find out I've been a nitwit
about this. I've run it on systems and got 5 gigs of hard drive
space back! Also, I like the interface of the uninstall feature it has.

I've used Tiny Personal Firewall for some years, from version
2.something to TPF6.0 I'm no expert, but the various firewall testers
out there seemed to suggest that it was working OK, although I found
the user interface very complex. I recently upgraded to the CA
version and found that it has a much simpler user interface. I
imagine that expert users can tweak it to match their needs.
Incidentally, I'm on a single-user XP Pro system with no guest
accounts, and always assumed that I had full administrator rights, but
this firewall is the only piece of software I've come across that
demands logging on as 'administrator' in order to install it.
