Here is mine.......

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

Oh but now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell - 1967

What's yours?

This is a song called Après Un Rêve by Fauré. It's usually sung in french, but here is the english translation:

In a slumber charmed by your image
I dreamed of happiness, ardent mirage;
Your eyes were more tender, your voice pure and clear.
You were radiant like a sky brightened by sunrise;
You were calling me, and I left the earth
To flee with you towards the light;
The skies opened their clouds for us,
Splendors unknown, glimpses of divine light...
Alas! Alas, sad awakening from dreams!
I call to you, oh night, give me back your illusions;
Return, return with your radiance,
Return, oh mysterious night!

If there`s one thing in my life that`s missing
It`s the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool and bright clear water
There`s lots of those friendly people
They`re showing me ways to go
But I never want to lose their inspiration

Time for a cool change
I know that it`s time for a cool change
And I know that my life is so pre-arranged
I know that it`s time for a cool change

Well I was born in the sign of water
And it`s there that I feel my best
The albatros and the whales they are my brothers
And it`s kind of a special feeling
When you`re out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon like a lover

Chorus

I`ve never been romantic
And sometimes I don`t care
I know it may sound selfish
But let me breathe the air

If there`s one thing in my life that`s missing
It`s the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool and bright clear water
It`s kind of a special feeling
When you`re out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon like a lover

Gabs,

Looks like we have very similar tastes as most of what you have mentioned, I have them! :D

If you really like Cat Stevens you should remember to pick up his DVD entitled "Majikat" it was released recently but the concert dates back to 1976 and all his music is featured in it and is a wonderful DVD to own and enjoy. You know the act would never be repeated.:)

One song that's consistantly touched me, ever sine I first heard it way back when I purchased 'The Bends' on a whim on release day way back in the mid nineties, would be Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohad. In particular the sheer beauty of the final section "Immerse your soul in love".

Starálfur by Sigur Ros too. That's one that always seems to touch my heart,

R.E.M......Everybody Hurts

When your day is long and the night,
The night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough
With this life,
Well hang on

Don't let yourself go,
'Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your days is night alone, alone
If you feel like letting go,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life,
Well hang on

Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand
Oh, no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone,
No, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life,
The days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts,
Sometimes everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So, hold on, hold on, hold on...
(Everybody hurts... You are not alone)

This songs Lyrics never fail to touch my heart when i hear them....;)

Toching for me:

MICHAEL JACKSON LYRICS

"Cry"

[Verse 1]
Somebody shakes when the wind blows
Somebody's missing a friend, hold on
Somebody's lacking a hero
And they have not a clue
When it's all gonna end

[Verse 2]
Stories buried and untold
Someone is hiding the truth, hold on
When will this mystery unfold
And will the sun ever shine
In the blind man's eyes when he cries?

[Chorus:]
You can change the world (I can't do it by myself)
You can touch the sky (Gonna take somebody's help)
You're the chosen one (I'm gonna need some kind of sign)
If we all cry at the same time tonight

[Verse 3]
People laugh when they're feelin sad
Someone is taking a life, hold on
Respect to believe in your dreams
Tell me where were you
when your children cried last night?

[Verse 4]
Faces fill with madness
Miracles unheard of, hold on
Faith is found in the winds
All we have to do
Is reach for the truth

[Chorus]

And when that flag blows
There'll be no more wars
And when all calls
I will answer all your prayers

[Chorus x3]

Change the world

MICHAEL JACKSON LYRICS

"You Are Not Alone"

Another day has gone
I'm still all alone
How could this be
You're not here with me
You never said goodbye
Someone tell me why
Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

But you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
But you are not alone

'Lone, 'lone
Why, 'lone

Just the other night
I thought I heard you cry
Asking me to come
And hold you in my arms
I can hear your prayers
Your burdens I will bear
But first I need your hand
Then forever can begin

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
For you are not alone

Whisper three words and I'll come runnin'
And girl you know that I'll be there
I'll be there

You are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay
For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

For you are not alone...

Poets of the Fall - Someone Special

I wake up to the sound of rain upon my sill
Pick up the pieces of my yesterday old thrill
Can I deliver this used up shiver
To how I pronounce my life
And I leave it up to faith to go by its own will

Back row to the left, a little to the side
Slightly out of the place
Look beyond the light, where you'd least expect
There's someone special

A foggy morning greets me quietly today
I smell a fragrance in the wind blowing my way
And ever further I run to find her
I yearn to define my life
Placing my faith in chance to meet me in half way

Back row to the left, a little to the side
Slightly out of the place
Look beyond the light, where you'd least expect
There's someone special

And she's here to write her name
On my skin with kisses
In the rain, hold my head and ease my pain
In a world that's gone insane

Back row to the left, a little to the side
Slightly out of the place
Look beyond the light, where you'd least expect
There's someone special

Words! Bee Gees

Smile an everlasting smile
A smile could bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'Cause that would bring a tear to me
This world has lost it's glory
Let's start a brand new story
Now my love right now there'll be
No other time and I can show you
How my love
Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away.

Uh, ok, on a serious note...

REM's Everybody Hurts touched me when I first heard it, which was the day I came home with the album.

In '97, when I first realised my marriage was over, that song actually helped me.

And watching REM, Friday night, Glastonbury 2003, when they sang that song actually moved me to tears. Good job it was dark ;)

Cat Stevens, Father and Son, brings back a memory, I remember getting all choked up playing that, way back when I was 21, when I was going through one of of those 'not talking to parents' times. Didn't speak to them for two years, actually, kinda stupid, looking back.

Coupla tracks off Live's 'Secret Samadhi' album get to me 'Drunk on your juices' is a fine lyric.

Aphrodites' Child's 'Rain and Tears' I like, makes me feel sortta stupid and warm.

And the Bee Gees' 'First Of May' kinda moves me, childhood memories. 'When I was small, and Christmas Trees were tall'

Lots of lyrics have impressed me, particularly 'Floppybootstomp' by Captain Beefheart & The Magic band, but few have moved me.

More? The Kinks' 'Waterloo Sunset' IS London personified, timeless song.

I'm sure I'll think of more :)

That song must have saved hundreds if not thousands of lives over the years for people who were on the brink of doing something silly....I know this song helped me back in Feb 97 when my relationship went up the swanny.....

The Album Automatic for the people which i bought when released, is still in my top 5 albums of all time, and i don't think it will ever be dislodged.....

Aye, agreed, I was certainly close, but I too selfish, lol ;) I heard an interview with Michael Stipe where he said he'd had hundreds or thousands of letters thanking him. He also said he felt good about that, which is fair enough.

February '97 eh? Spooky. For me it was actually Feb. 1st of that year, I'll probably never forget that day.
