I have a problem where my computer shuts down by itself
cause lsass.exe has shut down. I tried running the sasser
removal tool but it does not find anything. I then read
on a Micrsoft KB article that said I needed to either
reinstall or repair Windows xp. I have done a format and
reinstall using the software that came with my computer,
but after I booted the computer back up and installed
office XP I get the same problem. I have not installed
anything else but what came with my computer(which ran
fine for a year) and the Office XP. Is there any other
fix that can be had for this problem?

Joel;

You connected to the internet without a firewall, without any antivirus
program installed, and without applying the updates from Windows Update that
would have prevented your computer from being infected...
and you wonder why your clean install is infected?

The average time for an unprotected computer to be infected with Sasser is
18 seconds.

I recommend you read other posts regarding this issue, or enable the windows
firewall and visit Windows Update and read the steps necessary to protect
your computer. If the LSASS screen comes up during this process, click on
Start, click on Run, and in the box type "shutdown -a" (without the quotes).

There are several viruses that can cause this. Try McAfee stinger.
It's a downloadable scanning engine that looks for a limited # of
viruses. Or run several of the online virus scanning engines:

Online and Downloadable Virus Scanning:

Bit Defender Online Virus Scan:

Symantec Online Virus and Security Scan:

Bobby,

I have not connected this computer to the internet at
all. I have not set up the modem drivers yet. I am
currently using my work computer to post this and the
first message. I reformated the computer and reinstalled
the software that came with the computer because of this
issue, Not more then 20 minutes after restarting the
computer after reinstalling office XP. Now I do not think
it is a virus because of the fact that I do not have the
modem drivers installed.

Thanks for your responce bobby but your sarcasm is not
needed on these newsgroups. For some people these can be
serious problems and need help, not sarcasm.
