I have a strange question. A customer of mine brought me a 1 week old
machine that has never been on the internet. Let me try to explain what is
going on with it. Of course they have not create a restore CD yet right?
That would be too easy.

The machine boots to the Windows Splash Screen and the slider goes back and
forth. Then the screen displays a blank black page with the mouse pointer.
Then a box appears that says: "lsass.exe unable to locate component Failed
to start" there is an Ok button but the machine freezes at that point.

A Google search only brought up the isass.exe results (Blaster if my memory
serves me correct)

So can I copy that Lsass.exe from another machine and drop it into the
\system32\ folder to revive the machine?

Help me out Please.

lsass.exe is a system process of the Microsoft Windows security mechanisms.
It specifically deals with local security and login policies, and is NOT to
be confused with the lsas.exe virus.
Do a system recovery use your WinCD and go to repair!

Well I would love to just pop in the CD and do a repair install but the
problem my customer has not created the recovery disks yet.

Can I copy that .exe from another machine and insert it into the System32
file or is the .exe system specific?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your posting here.

Was there any Dll file mentioned in the error message? For example,
lsasrv.dll?

If so, you can try to boot into recovery console and extract the
"lsasrv.dll" file off of the Windows XP CD and into the C:\Windows\System32
directory. Then reboot computer.

Wish it helps.

No there is no mention of any DLLs in the error message. I copied the
lsass.exe from another machine put it in the system32 folder.....well the
machine booted to the OS. A definite plus. But now I am getting the error
code 0x80070078 and it says something about a problem preventing licenses.
Any more thoughts? Oh by the way I did back up the old lsass.exe file before
hand.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your update.

Would you please let me know the detailed error message? It is very
important for use to troublesthoot this issue.

It will be better that you describe the detailed symptoms and the action
how you get the error.

Thank you,

Bob thanks for helping me out with this issue. The started off with the
error of having the "Corrupt or Missing C:\Windows\System32\config\system
file". So I copied and replaced the system file from the C:\Windows\repair
folder. After that I copied the following files from the C:\System Volume
Information\_restore... folder _registry_user_default,
_registry_machine_security, _registry_machine_software,
_registry_machine_system, and _registry_machine_sam and renamed them and
replaced them in the System32\config folder. The machine boots up but now I
am getting an error message when I try to log into the machine under any
profile I get an dialog box that pops up saying something along the line of
Profile Database is corrupt (I will have to post back with the exact
verbiage of that dialog box) but when I try to log in under any account the
desktop flashes then I get a error message that says: Error Code 0x80070078
Problem Preventing Licenses". After I hit OK I get the Logging Off screen
and I am sitting back at the Welcome Screen.

I hope that this is enough Information. Thanks,

Hi Neil,

Can you boot Windows XP into Safe Mode? If so, please try to run System
Restore in Safe Mode to restore to the system to a time before any recent
issue occured.

Please be aware that by doing the restore point will remove all changes
that came after the restore point that is selected and you may need to
re-install or download some programs again.

If the problem still persists, in order to resolve the problem more
efficiently, I would like to recommend that you perform in-place upgrade.
Please refer to the following document for more information.

Note: Please backup the important data before repairing system.

Have a nice day!

Bob thanks for your help. I ended up ordering the system recovery disks from
HP and did a full system recovery. The systems seems to be running fine.
