lsass.exe - system error

I get this error and a popup that says "An invalid
parameter was passed to a service or function". If I
click OK it loops back around to the Windows XP splash
screen then hangs and pops up this message again. Can't
get out of this and can't figure out what it means or why
it is happening. I've done nothing extraordinary on this
desktop. It is only 2 months old (HP Pavilion a400y) with
minimal new programs loaded and this just happened out of
the blue when I turned it on last night. Is there a way
to overcome this strange error or am I screwed?

try "chkdsk /r"
