I changed my ram from 2x 256MB to 2x 2GB, then when starting the pc had the
above error. I removed one of the cards, still the same. i then removed both
cards and replaced with my original cards, windows worked correctly
I then put the new cards in and the fault returned.
I am back using the old RAM and everything is OK, does anyone know what the
problem is. My system is capable of taking 2GB, so i do not know the problem,
other than both cards are broken

Chances are the settings in BIOS are wrong concerning the chip timings or you obtained the
wrong type of modules.

I bought the modules after checking which type to buy on the crucial website
using the scan tool, and they match the originals PC3200 400. i have no idea
what BIOS settings to change or what to?

How many ram slots do you have? You said you bought 4 gig when you
motherboard can only take 2 gig? Do you know what MB you have? Do you have
manual? Check MB website. My MB has 3 slots max 512mb for total of 1.5 gig.
Divided your max ram by number of slots. I can't put >512mb in any slot.
Can't put 1 gig in one slot and 512 mb in other

Thanks for the replies, i have been digging around and found this ifo. If i
have read it correctly it says the maximum RAM available is 512, which would
explain the problem. When i down loaded the crucial tool it said i had space
for 2048MB, which is why i bought the 2x 1GB chips. I do not know what any of
the information means but i am hoping one of the 'Boffins' in the community
do!!
Am i resigned to selling my new chips on ebay, or have i got to get a new
motherboard or sommething?

If a Crucial wizard indicates the max. RAM is 2GB for the motherboard and the motherboard
manual indicates that the max. RAM is 512MB then I think you have a cause of action to get a
refund.

What is your motherboard? This freeware programme is excellent for
getting information about your computer:
Everest Home Edition is an interesting (freeware) source of information:

Sorry to be such a pain guys.
The link to lavalys didnt work, How do I find what my motherboard is?
and unfortunately i used the crucial tool then bought the RAM where it was
cheaper.
Did i read that correctly that i have only got 512MB available to me?
If so, it will probably be cheaper to get a new moptherboard wouldnt it?

After running the everest program, i am pretty sure i cant use any modules
over 512MB, meaning my 1GB chips are useless. That program is very good, and
will help me in the future no doubt. I think my next action is to get a new
Motherboard, which will probably means something else wont be compatible!!!

Thanks anyway for the help, it is much appreciated : )

Rob

Replacing a motherboard is a long way down the road to replacing a
computer. Can you copy / paste the motherboard details from Everest into
a further post.

Why did you originally decide to buy the memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the Performance
Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak? Can you try this when
the computer is under pressure?

also play alot of counterstrike, basically i bought a budget PC and have
added new memory (was 256Mb to start) and graphics card, DVD drive, firewire,
should have spent the extra on a better PC! A lessonlearned.

The attached link if I understand it correctly clearly suggests your
Motherboard supports up to 2 gb memory,
http://www.bzboyz.com/store/product4172.html

What is your BIOS version?

In Everest under Motherboard, Bios, what is the BIOS message? What else
does it say about your BIOS?

Do you have Manuals for your Computer?

You might call this telephone number for advice -see link
http://www.esupport.com/biosupgrades/index.cfm

I cannot get a result searching this web site but they should know
whether you need a BIOS update or point you to advice about BIOS
settings.

You mention PC World. Can they advise you?
