LSASS.EXE System Error - The end point format is invalid

Hi everyone:

Has a cause/solution for this problem been found yet? I've seen other posts suggesting either the Sasser virus or the KB835732 patch, but neither of these appear to be the issue in my case.

My friend's PC had this error message on bootup (XP Home, upgraded from 98SE several months ago). When he clicked on "OK", the PC reboots and goes through the exact same cycle. I wasn't able to get into Safe Mode (same error), but I was able to get in using the "Last known working config..." option. Then it was fine, except for the display. The screen was showing a very low resolution (looked like Safe mode, but wasn't) and going into display properties showed no other options. I'm guessing I'll have to reinstall the video drivers. But it otherwise SEEMS fine at the moment.

I ran a virus scan which reported no problems and all the Windows updates and patches have been applied. Any ideas? Will the Sasser virus not be found by a regular scan? Is a special removal tool needed? Or is there something else I should be checking/doing? Thanks in advance.

Regards,
