LSASS.exe problem

XP with SP-2 gets all the way up to Welcome screen, then shows a small error
screen that begins with "ISASS.exe" and shuts down. Every restart attempt
same. BUT if I turn system off, let it go for a while it will start with no
problem.
System has Athlon 2800, 512MB RAM, new 160GB HDD, Asus A7V400-MX.
I have ot use hybernate to shut it off or I go through the routine described.
Any ideas?

You have a hardware problem. Maybe CPU overheating, RAM, somthing like that.

Can you tell me what ISASS.exe does or where I can go to find out?

Like to learn more about this Isass.exe problem as it is affecting me quite
badly.

Normally when I first boot up my computer, it works
fine. However, subsequent restarting caused the
following message to appear:

Isass.exe - System Error
An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed
unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or
write out or flush one of the files that contains the
system image of the registry.

Upon clicking the "Ok" button at the bottom of this
message, the computer will reboot and the message
comes back on.

Booting into safe mode is possible though.

Could you tell me what is causing this problem and how
to solve it? Thanks

I never did get a good answer to this problem from the newsgroup. So, I went
into the registry, searched for all items that had Norton in them and removed
them. The problem stopped. I don't understand the problem but I'm happy now
with having fixed it, though doing what I did was risky, except for xxclone
which allowed me to image my C: drive to a new HDD I have installed. So, if
disaster had occured I could have recovered.
