LSASS constant disk access?

LSASS.EXE continuously access the hard disk when the computer is idle. I have
tried disabling Zone Alarm and virus checkers, turned off disk indexing etc.
but I cannot stop the continuous disk activity.
What is lsass doing and can it be stopped?

Yes I assume this is a similar problem. I have tried disabling Terminal
Services and all othe services one at a time and monitoring the disk i/o from
lsass using Task Manager. I cannot stop lsass continuously doing disk i/o's.
It does 5-10 i/o's per second when the computer is idle.

Correction to my last message: I disabled Terminal Services and rebooted.
lsass.exe is now quiet on idle. There is something else still doing i/o's
occasionally.. will investigate but this has cured 90% of the problem.
Thanks Bryan.
