Low Disk Space

Guest

I keep getting a error message of low disk space. I have a 20 gig on this
computer and it is not even 1/4 filled. I have it divided with 7 partitions.
My question is; is there a way to combine 2 or 3 of these partitions without
having to format ?

How much space is left on your C drive? That's what it's talking about, not
your entire drive.

When was the last time you did a Disk cleanup/Chkdsk/Defrag? When was the
last time you emptied your temporary files (hidden in XP), cookies and
temporary Internet files, including offline?

Well, then, you have two choices:

1. Reformat and reinstall Windows, programs, etc.

2. Buy Partition Magic or something similar and make that partition larger.

I would reformat as I don't trust Partition Magic type programs and
reformatting is free, but that's just me.

There is a way to combine partitions, but not with anything that comes
with WinXP. You'll need a third-party program (like Partition Magic,
http://www.norton.com/partitionmagic). That will resize, combine,
convert from one file system to another and other functions, without
losing data.

Realistic space requirements for Windows XP SYS/Boot partion is a minimum of
16 GB. Get a new disk and quit playing 98 drama.
Do the Microsoft math 2004 - 1998 = ((2004 +1) - (1998 -1) = 8 years.
Virtually 3 life times in terms of computer technology.

I disagree. 20 gigs can be plenty, depending on what you are going to use
your computer for, don't you think? Seven partitions is a bit much, though
and I would reformat and put a 15/5 set up with 15 for the "C" drive.

The message refers to a single partition, not to the entire
drive.

Why do you have seven partitions? Unless you have a very unusual
special situation, that's way overkill, especially for such a
small drive, and usually results in problems like what you're
experiencing.

No version of Windows has ever had the ability to change the
partition structure of a drive nondestructively. The only way to
do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is
the best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware
alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's
shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial, so you should be
able to do what you want within that 30 days. I haven't used it
myself, but it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs
here.

You're correct. I thoht it was a 20 GB drive.
So why even ask the question.
MOVE some data off the 20 GB partition onto another Partition. DAH!
I will eat my keyboard if all the 20 GB is need for the OS and Programs. ;)

To relieve pressure on C:

Move My Documents to a different partition. Open a My Computer window
on the selected partition and another on
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname to show My Documents
*Right* drag the folder across, taking *Move* here

Move Temporary Internet files - in Control Panel - Internet Options,
first click the Delete files, then click Settings and Move folder. And
while about it reduce the space it is allowed, usually *far* too much

Check in C:\Windows for hidden folders $NTUninstallQnnnnnn which are
files that would be needed to uninstall the update described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn
If you will not want to uninstall, and you probably won't, you can
delete these folders. If you have installed SP2 and it as settled in,
see Tidying up at

If C is still under pressure you might be able to uninstall one of the
bigger software packages you have there and reinstall, taking Custom
Install and using a different location

If all else fails and you have to resize partitions, you will need third
party software
