Low battery warning

Jerry Marr

Every once in a while during startup I get a popup warning that my battery
power is less than 10% even though I'm plugged in with a fully charged
battery. I have a clean install on a ThinkPad R50p build 5384. Anybody
else seeing something like this?

Jerry,

I also have it every once in a while. I have a Compaq/HP Presario laptop
model V5108CU. I don't worry about it, as I know I am plugged into electric.
It doesn't last very long. I usually just click to close it and then it
changes to show fully chaged battery.

I get the same thing - an annoying bubble upon startup. Vista is obviously
struggling to detect battery levels for a brief time. Its not a bother but
I wish I could get rid of the warning bubble.

I find that I get this message when I start up Media Center. And I don't
even have my battery connected to the computer but am running on power.

Colin:
I have an APC RS1500 that my two x64 towers are plugged into. The USB cable
is plugged into one tower, when I installed the APC software there was a
warning message that there is a known battery conflict with Windows x64 and
that a low battery message may appear but there is not a problem with the
UPS. I occasionally get the message only on the tower that the USB
monitoring cable is plugged into. One time that tower went into a shut-down
hibernation after ac power was restored after battery usage due to a line
voltage drop. The other tower doesn't notice the switch between ac and
battery. I haven't tried installing the APC software on Vista x64 yet. The
APC cable is plugged into my test tower and I'll be using it more since I
have w2k3sp2 to install on that tower. Thank You for your assistance.

I also receive this warning on a notebook. I have been unable to detect a
pattern. Interestingly, the notebook has the capability to operate while on
AC power if the battery is physically removed, and the warning appears in
both scenarios.

I'm using a Gateway M675 laptop and I haven't seen this warning.

It seems like quite a few have, though.

Colin:
I don't remember bugging it with x64. I'm currently on sick leave for a
few weeks and should have more time for testing between naps. In x86 UPS
has a separate category under power options. Com 1 and com 4 are the only
ports listed for the UPS so x86 doesn't recognize it. In x64 with the UPS
plugged into the USB port there's an additional column in power options
called powermeter. With the USB cable unplugged the powermeter column isn't
there. In Vista x64 under power options with the USB cable plugged in the
UPS is automatically installed and listed as a battery, with it unplugged
there is no battery listed. The APC software doesn't install on Vista x64
and its noted to contact APC for updated software. It looks like starting
with Windows x64 the presence of a battery or UPS is automatically detected
by the operating system, possibly to have a shut-down buffer if ac power is
lost.

Yes, x64 detected mine but the software for the ups does run, though clearly
not so OK. I guess I can bug it for sp2 beta and see what happens.
