Loud FAn on a Dell

Hi. I have a dell 4600 and it is really loud. I has a pentium 4 cpu, 765mb
ram, intel intergrated graphics. Ive only had the computer for 2 years. On
the first month, it was already really loud. I don't know which fan it is and
why it is making all this noise. Please help.

One trick I use is to take a long screwdriver, place the handle against your
ear and the tip of the screwdriver on the fan case. Make certain you don't
touch the fan blades or anything else for that matter. This acts as a simple
stethoscope.

Hi,

I have a few Dell notebooks and it seems fan noise is one of their common
characteristics although later models tend to be better than earlier ones. I
have one I8000 which is really loud and fans are constantly on.

There are some tweaks in their forum about how to reduce the start frequency
of fans. You may find such tips (and utility from users - not from Dell)
from Power Control sections of the forum.

However, I did not do any tweaks or change BIOS settings, as although this
might be annoying, but the purpose is the get out of heat from within the
notebook. And it could eventually damage the system from overheat, if I did
not do the tweaks correctly.

I noticed that this symptom seems also associate with user's environment.
For example, I found the system has much less frequency of starting the fan
when working on a "metal" office desk with a cooler environment (such as at
my office) than at a wooden desk with a normal temperature (such as my study
room at home). I also found that more powerful notebooks (i.e. Inspiron for
desktop replacement) may have generated more heat than a slim/ultra-slim
models. But these are just my own user's experience without any formal
scientific researches,

Again, I am not sure if that's your problem as "noise" can be in many forms
and it could also indicate fans are having problems. But as mentioned, once
the fan is started, it is noisy.

Just for your reference and hope this helps.

I actually even tried to use conpressed air to lower the heat pressure.
Should I use water cooling on a dell? I heard that there is a sensor that
tells the computer that the fan is their and if it is not there, there will
be an error message. Is that true? Is there any other way of lowering the fan
noise in the fan and not damage the system?

Almost every computer fan made in the last dozen years can handle being
stopped...or more precisely, held from turning when first powered...with no
damage whatsoever. If you haven't yet figured out which fan is making the
noise, work out a way to stop each one individually. BUT DON'T stop the CPU
fan...determine if it is the noisemaker by proving the others are not.

You can buy quieter replacement fans. The blade design and rotational speed
determines the noise, and a better designed (more expensive) fan will be
quieter. It shouldn't take a lot of googling to find quiet fans...
