lots of work lost; saved Excel file reverted to a much earlier ver

I had done a ton of work building a financial model in Excel. Somehow, today,
all of that work disappeared. In fact the Excel file on my disk says that it
hasn't been modified since the day it was created (April 26, 2005). That's
insane. I have worked on that workbook almost every day since its creation
date. (Today is May 16, 2005). I have no idea how in the world such a thing
happened. How in the world can an Excel file suddenly revert back to its
original version, wiping out all the changes that were made to it over many
days of work? Amazing to me that the actual file on my hard drive says that
it hasn't been modified in all of this time. Has anyone ever heard of this
happening?
I decided to download all the MS Office XP updates (service packs etc) from
the Microsoft site. Perhaps I experienced this problem because I had not yet
taken this step in over a year of using Excel from MS Office XP.
I have never experienced anything like this in Excel. It is shocking to me
to lose so much work, so much so that I have to rethink very seiously my data
storage procedures and backups. (I had not been backing up my Excel files to
removable media. That will now change.)
If anyone has any ideas about what happened or what I can do to prevent this
sort of thing from happening in the future, please let me know. Thank you.

Hey, folks, I am a total idiot.

I had been saving the working copy of the file under a different name in a
different directory. Wow, what a dork I am.

Please ignore my previous post altogether.
I will make sure to explore all possibilities before posting in a panic like
that next time.
Sorry for wasting your time.
