LOTS of Pop Up's

Has any one noticed an increase in pop up windows lately with IE6. I have
been swamped with them. Yes I have service pack 2. Yes I have the firewall
active. Yes I have the pop up blocker turned on and set to High. What am I
missing? I know someone is going to ask me some for some detail like "Does
the build number have dashes or comma's in it." I have given you what I
know. If you need to know if the CD packaged in the morning or afternoon in
order to give me advise Thanks but dont even go there. If you know what I am
overlooking please just tell me. Thanks

This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware, Windows Defender and/or Spybot Search & Destroy
to remove it.

Windows Defender (beta)

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Good sites on how to install and use Spybot -
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html
http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index1.php

Also download a winsock repair tool, to have just in case cleaning up
anything found breaks it -

Winsock repair tools:
LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

More information here:

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs.
Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

Or if you have IE 6 SP-2 you can do this within the browser:
How to manage Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP Service Pack 2

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
spyware cleaners above don't have in their databases yet. In that case....
HijackThis direct download:

Then post it's output log to the forum here for analysis and feedback by the

Or one of the other HijackThis Logs forums listed here:

Beside the good advice and Tips by Jon, it depends on the kind of sites you
visit if you visiting a website built with a lot of Pop-Ups triggered by
(Java applet) or clicking on any link on their page, then it will do it
Automatically unless you close it from the *X* or by pressing ALT + DEL
+CTRL, this the kind of agressive marketing tools which adopted by some
websites to push you buy their stuff.
If you have Windows Firewall it will not be enough to protect you from the
WWW, try a third party Firewall.

I have windows defender. and I am getting pop-ups right now and this
microsoft page is the only site that I have opened. I am fighting to close
them. I have two monitors and in monitor 2 I have no less than 30 open
windows. Thanks for the inputs but ..... Could it be partly because I am on
a wireless network (yes it is secured). I talked to the "Geek Squad" at Best
Buy and they said that I just have to accept that it is part of the internet
and how it works.

Tom this crap just started a couple of weeks ago. And just gets worse. I
have found that the geeks are wrong more than they are right. But a broken
clock is right twice a day so I gave them a shot. I smell a format coming.
Nothing is better than the smell of format in the morning.

Have you installed the Google Toolbar, and enabled the pop-up blocker?
I also use the hosts file from Spybot Search and Destroy.

I concur with one of the others, that you may have some malware issues on
your system.

Even though I don't have any pop-ups or other problem issues with IE, I have
converted to Firefox and only use IE for Windows Updates.

Hi Paul,
Let's be clear about this, your computer is infested by Malwares/Grayware
and Viruses, clean you system first and then troubleshoot other ocurances if
any will be eft after cleaning yor system.
It does n't mean you have Defender you will not be infected, Defender still
Beta software, scan for Viruses online from here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasofteares.com
http://www.sophos.com
http://www.avast.com
For Anti-Spywares:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Then Open your HOSTS file by opening the windows explorer and you will find
it in this path;
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc if you can't see be sure to enable show
hidden files from your Tools >> Folder Options and click on the Radio Button
Show hideen files and folders and also be sure to diselect after finishing.
Locate the Hosts file (but not the one with extension .SAM) and open it in
Notepad.
Delete any references for any websites there and click safe and close.

Try to block any open port on your Router Firewall or in another word try
set the Router Firewall and see which Ports Opened to the www and block it if
it will n't affect your connection.
The Guys in Geek squad they did not give a good advice at all.

Please let us know.
