XP Pro/SP2. Standalone PC attached to Net via cable modem.

Utilities show that my firewall incessantly accessing the Services
file even when there is no network user traffic.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\services

There are perhaps a dozen queries a second at time when I am not
access anything on the Net.

Is this correct?

yes i believe it is correct, there are a whole host of windows services
running in the background as well as programmes on your system that require
constant contact with the internet. some may only access daily or weekly, but
many are every few minutes...your email for example, i bet if you check your
settings it is looking every 10 minutes or so for new mail.

But looking every 10 minutes is way differet from a dozen times a
second!

The status is good.

I use two or three online virus scanners and I vary which ones I use.
I use MBSA and I use a spyware detector too.

Then look in Event Viewer for clues, run Task Manager and watch it, do
clean-boot troubleshooting to see what is running. Could be printer
software, updaters, indexing.
