Lost XP

Need some help. I have a machine with xp pro installed. AMD processor with 512 megs memory. I had been have trouble with IE 6.0 not opening. I decided to reload. After I did that, I rebooted the machine and now it won't even recongnize the operating system. I can get into the bios to set up new boot devise but once I save it and reboot, the video stops working and the only way I can get video back is to reset the cmos. I can't even get to the windows set up screen.
Anyone have any ideas?

Major hardware flaw. Hard to say exactly which component. Disk is my
best guess.
