I had three computers with XP connected on a network through dataports and
each could access the printer (brother 7020) (never did get shared scanning
capabiliites)...anyway I installed AVG with firewall version and lost
printing capabilities and lost my workgroup and can't get either back.
Not sure where to start looking. Don't know much about firewalls. I had
clicked that the AVG firewall sould override the MS firewall, but Idon't
think that's happened..but not really sure.

You're going to have to tweak the AVG firewall to permit file sharing on the
subnet. If you truly don't know where to start looking, then you'll have to un
install AVG completely. Don't install software when you knowingly "don't know
where to start looking". And check the Security Center in Control Panel, and
make sure that Windows Firewall is truly disabled.

Thanks for the reply. I know where to find things on the computer, I just
don't know where to best begin the troubleshooting process. As far as I can
see MS is not allowing the AVG firewall to be enabled, so tweaking it may not
make any difference?? Still stumped.
What would be the reason to uninstall? I already know the workgroup worked
before installation.
I thought best way to learn computers was by doing?

I tried deactivating the AVG firewall and keeping the windows one and
everything is now working as before. Thanks for the assistance.

Am I Okay to leave only windows Firewall running or do I now try to bring the
AVG one back? Since I just paid for it, I' wondering if it's really any use
to me?
Regards,
Gin

Gin,

The subject of "Windows Firewall" vs third party is an endless debate subject in
many forums. My opinion is that either is acceptable, in a properly designed
layered strategy.

Every personal firewall is designed to be used with Windows Networking -
personal firewalls were designed for this reason originally. Every personal
firewall, WF or third party, can be properly configured, and AVG is no
exception.

The problem with many third party firewalls is that they become
multi-functional, as they try to increase market share. The additional
components, added to each, make them more complex. You have to find all of the
settings that affect Windows Networking.
