since installing the last updates my wireless adapter seems to have
disappeared. System restore fixed it - but i forgot to turn off "install
updates automatically" and the adapter again disappeared.
system restore wouldn't sort it this time - and nothing seems to help.
any ideas anyone

It has disappeared from Device Manager?

I suspect that the wireless driver is not current for Vista? In any
event, even if the driver is Vista compatible, go to the vendor's site,
download and install the latest Vista-compatible driver.

Q

The wireless adapter is not in devices! - its not a stand alone adapter - its
the one built into the processor and came with the laptop - 5 month old HP.
AMD version of the centrino. I've uninstalled the upodates one by one but
that hasn't worked - only think left is to use the restore manager to take it
back to the factory settings?

Check your BIOS settings, sometimes the onboard wireless can be turned off
there.
If it is enabled, in device manager, set it to 'show hidden devices'.
If it's not there, you may need to contact the manufacturer for warranty
service.
