lost sound

One of my computers is win98se.I seem to have lost all
sound on it.The Device Manager does not list any sound
device and I do not have any idea what sound card
is "installed" . Whenever I open Media player to play a
music file the messages " sound is being used by another
device , is faulty and sound not installed" comes
up.Please help.

Try booting into Windows Using SAFE MODE. While in Safe
Mode look for any audio devices in the Device Manager and
remove them. Then boot into windows in normal mode.
Windows should automatically detect your Sound card and
install the device drivers. If it doesn't, try switching
the card to a different slot on your PC.
