Lost RAM after reinstall of Vista

I have just done a fresh install from the recovery partition in my
Tohsiba X205 laptop.

I have 4 GB of RAM installed, but I now see only 3 GB--and when I try
to activate ReadyBoost, there is an error message telling me there is
already a cache on another device in the system. Because of the sudden
disappearance of 1 GB of memory, I suspect it has somehow been
allocated to disk cache.

How do I go about recovering that 1 GB and activating ReadyBoost?

you have not installed sp1 yet?

I did install SP1--but Update had not yet installed it when I asked
the question.

I never knew about the 3.25GB limit! SysInfo now shows 4.00GB
installed, 3.00GB physical memory. ReadyBoost still says there's a
cache in another device on the system.

Am I correct in assuming that "missing" 1GB has been allocated to
cache? And if that's the case, how do I free it up, and how can I use
it>

Thanks for the responses.

Which version of Vista did you install. Remember 32 bit vista only support upto 3,25 GB RAM...

32 Bit--and I never knew about the limitation! Does that mean I have
1GB wasted?

Hi,

A 32-bit operating system can only have 4GB of memory addresses. Some of
these, roughly .7 to 1.2GB depending on the hardware and configuration, are
reserved for the system hardware, so what you get to use is the remainder.
You would need to migrate to the 64 bit version to increase capacity, but
keep in mind that most current 32-bit applications will not run from the
upper memory address range, so the additional memory capacity is not much
use to the average home user.

Hi,

All SP1 does is correct the reporting of the amount of installed ram. It
does not and cannot increase the limitation on addressing in a 32 bit
installation I explained in my other response.

Readyboost is designed for systems with low amounts of installed ram, above
2GB it is of virtually no use at all.
