Here's a suggestion:
You could probably get the key number from your hard drive
by using Belarc Advisor to generate a computer profile.
My computer's profile shows that Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition is installed, and it gives the key number. You
can download the free Belarc Advisor here:

EXACTLY, what type of Windows XP CD are you using?
OEM, Retail or Volume License

I have an upgrade version/ academic version. I read the
cd to the tech guy and he still could not find a key that
worked.

The key need to be for an Upgrade Academic version.
Go to the location you bought it, perhaps they can help.
Microsoft is very limited when it comes to support of non retail
items.
