Lost printer

Everything worked fine. No changes made. Now the computer says I don't have a printer installed or a driver for it. I tried uninstalling the printer and reinstalling it, stills says no printer. I downloaded a driver and it was successfully downloaded but HP help says no driver detected. I also noticed the cd writer can't copy onto a new cd. It will play music or view pictures but not copy anything. It keeps saying "insert disk" and there IS one in there. The computer won't restore to a different date. Any ideas?

I have a HP Pavilion 743c computer, Windows XP, and the printer is a HP deskjet 940c. It still wont detect a printer or driver for the printer. The errors mentioned "spooler". Also, the cd writer wont copy anything yet. I was hit with a bunch of viruses (16) this past August 6-13,2003. Norton shows that I have 16 backed up items that were repaired back in Aug. I didn't have any problems until Nov 20, 2003. I was wondering if a virus could be causing all these problems and Nov was the triggered event? A new scan for viruses came out ok.
