Lost Notes Tab in Notes Navigation Pane

Hello,

Outlook 2K7

I was playing around (oops!) and deleted the Notes Tab under "My Notes". Now
all I have is the "Notes in Archive Folders". Problem is when I click on the
Notes Button at the bottom of the Navigation Pane, it doesn't bring up my
current notes. How do I restore the current Notes tab under "My Notes"

Thanks for your help,
Robin

If you use the small dropdown arrow next to the icons, select "show more buttons" does the Notes button show as selected?

Hi Milly,

The Notes button shows on the list (Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes),
however when I select Notes, the center pane doesn't change. In other words
if I select Mail, the left pane is labeled "Mail" and it shows my folder
list, the center pane is labeled "Inbox" and it show the contents of inbox,
and the next pane is my preview pane.

If I select the Notes icon, the left pane changes to "Notes" with a sub menu
of "All Note Items" & "My Notes" which used to contain 2 icons, Notes and
Notes is Archive Folders (now only shows Notes in Archive Folders, this is
where I deleted the notes icon) and Current View with radio buttons. However
the center pane doesn't change, it still shows "Inbox" rather than a listing
of my Notes, and the next pane is still my preview pane. They don't change to
show me my Notes.

Thanks,
Robin

If you right click the default Notes folder while in the Folder List view,
do you have an "Add to My Notes" entry?

Hi Brian,
I don't appear to have a default "Notes" folder in "Folder List View".

The only way I can get to my current notes, is to right click the Notes tab
in the Navigation Pane and select "Open in a new window" then it opens to my
current notes.

Thanks,
Robin

Clearly you MUST have a Notes folder or you would not be able to see any
notes.

Try starting Outlook once with the /resetfolders and /resetfoldernames
command switches.

Hi Brian,

I tried restarting Outlook with the /resetfolder and /resetfoldernames
command switches (Start > Run > Outlook /resetfolder /resetfoldernames) and
while it took longer to start (hourglass), it doesn't appear to have helped.

I tried the /select foldername switch (Start > Run > Outlook /select
Outlook:notes)and it opens to my current Notes.

I agree that I have a default "Notes" folder, however is it possible to hide
the default folders from the list view? I cannot see a Calendars folder
either yet my calendar is working OK.

Before I go too much further, I am accessing exchange 2000 for my email
(don't know if that makes a difference).

Thanks for your help Brian.

Hi Brian,

Tried something else:
1) Tried the switch /resetnavpane, and now my calendar folder shows up as
well as my contacts folder, however no Notes folder.

2) Tried to copy the Notes folder from my Archive Folder to my mailbox and
it copied as Notes2. When I tried to rename it, it said that a folder by that
name already existed. So it appears I'm back to to wondering how/why the
Notes folder would/could be hidden.

Thanks again,
Robin

Then you're not using the Folder List view. There are buttons along the
bottom of the Navigation Pane. One says "Mail" and clicking that you'll see
only mail folders. One says "Calendar" and clicking that will display only
calendar folders. One says Notes and clicking that will show only notes
folders. You must flick the one that says "Folder List" in order to see all
your folders at one time.

Thanks Brian,

You're right. When I had sent this email I had accessed the wrong view. When
I access the Folder List View, I see all default folders (Calendar, Contacts,
Deleted Items, Drafts, Inbox, Junk Email, Outbox, RSS Feeds, Sent Items, &
Search Folders). But no Notes Folder.

Odd. It should come, obviously, between Junk E-mail and Outbox. It should
be impossible to delete one of the default folders, although I know you can
do it in Outlook Web Access. I don't see anywhere in your prior posts where
you've mentioned your account type. Assuming a POP account, were I you,
I'd first create a new folder that holds Notes items, at the same level as
Inbox, Outbox, and the rest. I'd then select the Notes view, select all the
notes with CTRL-A, and drag them to the notes folder I created. Then I'd
create a new PST (File>New>Outlook Data File) and make it my delivery
location (on Tools>Account Settings>Data Files). I'd then stop and restart
Outlook, wich will populate the new PST with all the default folders, but
still provide access to all the original folders as well. I'd then open
each of those old folders, select all the data with CTRL-A, and copy it to
the corresponding new default folder (copying the CONTENTS of the folders,
not the folders themselves). The Calendar folder must be in a table view
like By Category in order to use CTRL-A to select all the items. When I was
done copying all the data, I'd right-click the root of the old PST and
choose Close to remove the old PST from the folder list.

Hi Brian,

I had mentioned we are using Exchange 2000 in the second post on Jan 04, but
it was buried in the clutter.

I had tried similar to what you suggest. I copied my Notes folder from my
archives and pasted it into my primary Mailbox folder. It copied over as
Notes2. When I tried to rename it, it give me an error message that the name
already exists and to choose a different name. So again my primary Notes
folder is present, I just have difficulty accessing it. The only way to get
at it is to right mouse the notes icon in the navigation pane and select
"Open in New Window" then it opens the original Notes folder.

To work around, I left the Notes2 folder named as is and copied my original
notes to Notes2, because Notes2 shows up fine in my Navigation pane.

Thanks,
Robin
