lost mailto file type -- how to restore?

S

sing_acappella

Using Outlook 2003 (NOT on an exchange server) and IE6
with WinXP Home.

Am attempting to troubleshoot why I get a massive Internet
Explorer error when I click on a "mailto" link (65 copies
open plus error stating that the default email client is
not properly installed). I've found that if I check in
Windows Explorer (Tools/Folder Options), the file
type "URL:mailto" is missing from the list. Attempts to
restore that entry have been fruitless.

Suggestions are welcome!! Thanks.

If this is a recent issue, you might try using System Restore to take you
back to a time prior to when this began. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

If that doesn't resolve it, you might try using the repair option in
Outlook, if that fails to resolve it, try removing and reinstalling Outlook.
You should be able to get to either option by placing the Outlook or Office
2003 CD in the drive.

BTW, the steps I mentioned sets OE as default.

A Simpler Way

Typical IT people.... looking for the most complicated answer to what seems to be a complicated problem.

Let's try something really simple first.... if it doesn't work then feel free to drop code everywhere!

Go into Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs

Change the default email to something other than Outlook (probably Outlook Express will be there), click apply and then OK.

Now change it back to Outlook...........

Did it work?
