Lost fonts in Windows XP

After restarting Windows XP, all desktop text displayed
in "hieroglyphics" (unreadable characters).

Found that the Windows font directory was empty.

Copied the fonts from another machine, and reselected
the "Theme" - worked fine, until the next restart - back
to the same problem.

Any ideas please? I'd like to avoid a rebuild if
possible.
