lost files

Help...I think a virus has messed with my files.Some
programes won't even open.system restore will open and
progress to a point, and then give some error message .
I have to open the programs that will open in a round
about way,but most just come up and warn that such and
such fill cannot be found, or dll32 xxxxis missing.My
computer did notcome with a windows x.p. disk.How do i go
about getting one, short of buying it from a retailer?
any ideas will be appreciated.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
