Lost Files

I seem to have lost all the files in one folder. In their place are .dat
files. Not in the recycle bin and recovering the system to a previous date
does not help. Any ideas as to how i can find my documents. Most of which are
very imortant.

Could be a virus.

You might want to start looking for data recovery software or take the drive
to a data recovery company and be prepared to pay $200 to $2000.

As far as using system restore, that has no effect on your data, it's for
recovering very specific system files. It's most useful for times when
you've installed a driver that goes wild or when you install a program that
causes problems or for other things that you want to recovery from shortly
after you've done something that messes up the computer. It's not very
useful for long-term fixes, and it does nothing about safeguarding data.
