Lost files after Anytime Upgrade

After Windows Anytime upgrade from Vista Business to Ultimate (no error
messages, no blue screens) for some (not all) users appeared the loss of user
files and user specific settings. Users still did exist so we discovered this
problem a couple of days later. No difference between Administrators and
restricted users. No other problems occurred so far.
No big problem because lost user files I could easily recover from backup.
But I'm still wondering how this could happen. Maybe I'm facing other or
bigger problems in short and I will be able to prevent that If someone can
tell me what's the cause of my problem.

The files (I'd think) should still be there...
possibly in a different profile ...

I had the same thought but nothing could be found using the normal search
functionality. In case I did not have a backup maybe I should search again,
now I do not feel urgency to do so and do not have a clue how to find out.

Supposed you're right, stays my question: what happened?

Try an advanced search perhaps///
or manually use windows explorer and look in other profiles
