Every minute you use the computer, you decrease the chances of recovering
any files you may want. Shut it down, NOW!

On another computer go to www.ontrack.com and check out EasyRecovery
Professional. It has never failed me. Read about how to implement it
carefully. You are going to want to create the boot floppy and recover from
there.

Good luck!

This might work for you. Free recovery program.

Keep in mind that using your computer causes more laying down of data on the
HDD, so keep this to a minimum until you have resolved the lost data issue.

The next step, after using a recovery program, is a professional recovery
service, which usually charges a minimum of several hundred dollars.

If you didn't install anything then the chances are good that you can
recover with decent recovery tool. If you actually installed XP then you
will have wiped out a lot of data but may well be able to recover some files
that did not get overwritten in the installation process. I use Disk
Commander from Winternals but it is very expensive.
